Board of Trustees
Meet the team of volunteer trustees who are the managing board providing the centre’s strategy in liaison with senior staff.

Richard Batson
Chairman
Our chairman Richard Batson is a semi-retired journalist and freelance writer. He spent 40 years as reporter, chief reporter and community editor at the Eastern Daily Press working in locations across Norfolk, with the longest spell based in Cromer. Richard, who lives at Southrepps, is a proud Norfolk man, a trustee at Sheringham Little Theatre, press officer for the North Walsham War Memorial Hospital Friends, and, to relax, enjoys social golf at Mundesley, photography, countryside walks and playing guitar.
Dr Keith Bacon
Trustee
Dr Bacon, a retired teacher, is a highly respected local historian. He lives locally in Catfield where he chaired the Parish Council for many years. Among many of his interests, he chairs the Broads Forum and is a member of the Local Access Forum.


Michael Flett
Trustee
Michael joined the Trust at the end of 2014. He has a wealth of local knowledge, having been chairman of Ludham Parish Council, vice-chairman of the Broads Forum and is a past member of the Broads Local Access Forum. He is chairman and founder trustee of the Womack Charitable Trust whose main purpose is to maintain and administer a substantial mooring facility in Ludham. Michael is a keen and active member of the Friends of How Hill.
Brig Max Marriner CBE
Trustee
Max was a career soldier serving for 36 years including being the last Commander of British Forces in Iraq. After retirement in 2012 he has been heavily involved in a number of charities including being a former chief executive of the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind. A keen countryman, he is also a specialist volunteer for the National Trust and Norfolk Wildlife Trust and acts as pilot/guide on the Marsh Harrier electric boat for the Museum of the Broads.


Nicola Hems
Trustee
Nicola was the Curator of the Museum of the Broads. In that role, she managed a heritage attraction, and enabled visitors to appreciate and learn about the history, heritage, and ecology of the Broads. Nicola supports How Hill’s important educational work in increasing the understanding of our unique and fragile landscape. She is delighted to join the Board of Trustees and be a part of the Trust’s future.
Professor Tim Jickells
Trustee
Tim Jickells is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA, retiring in 2018 after more than 40 years of teaching and research work all connected to the natural environment, including wetlands. He has lived in Norfolk since 1985 and enjoys walking and cycling. He represents the Broads Authority on the How Hill Board of Trustees.


Andrew Scull
Trustee
Andrew is a former public company director whose international career included work in the chemical, oil, construction, paper manufacturing and promotional products industries. He is currently Chair of the Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust
